Thomas Hettche

Thomas Hettche was born in 1964 and grew up in a village in Hessen, where his family has lived and worked for generations as farmers and tradesmen. Along with his celebrated literary works, Hettche also writes essays primarily for the FAZ and the NZZ. Thomas Hettche is a co-founder and the first recipient of the Spycher Prize.
His most recent book Sinkende Sterne (Falling Stars) is a novel set in Valais: An avalanche has changed the Rhone valley into a giant lake and transformed the Valais back into a threatening, medieval world. Thomas Hettche lets his protagonists tumble from reality into a fantastical world. He connetcs autobiographical elements to the great questions of our time and he writes of the solace that storytelling can bring. The Frankfurter Rundschau describes the novel as follows: “Sinkende Sterne is an example of what language can do when the author understands how to use it masterfully.”
